Paul Sztorc and LayerTwo Labs have launched a new hard fork of Bitcoin known as the eCash network, introducing native ECX tokens to eligible holders. Many users often wonder bitcoin what is it when facing major network splits, and this latest development brings payments, privacy, and sidechains built directly from Bitcoinโs base code. The network went live at Bitcoin block 973,728, providing anyone who controlled their private keys at the exact snapshot with an equivalent amount of ECX.
Developed to combat what Sztorc describes as complacency within the ecosystem, eCash introduces Drivechains. This system allows developers to build independent sidechains for payments, privacy, and prediction markets without changing the main protocol, while miners can earn additional transaction fees. Five sidechains launched initially with the mainnet, including BitNames, BitAssets, Thunder, Truthcoin, and zSide, with photon and CoinShift sidechains planned for the future.
Eligible Bitcoin holders received an equivalent balance of ECX tokens through the eCash hard fork.
Claiming and accessing the new tokens requires careful handling by users who self-custody their assets. Because both networks share a transaction history, unprotected transactions can be replayed on the other chain. LayerTwo Labs advises holders to move their ECX tokens first before spending any BTC to avoid accidental transaction replay. Centralized exchange users must rely on their respective platforms to handle the distribution.
Trading options for ECX remain limited as the tokens are not yet widely available across major centralized platforms. NeoxEX opened native deposits, withdrawals, and trading with several pairs, while CoinW announced distribution plans for the future. Additionally, decentralized exchange Orca on Solana allows users to swap USDC for wrapped ECX through a liquidity pool, though this involves a wrapped token rather than native network trading. Market data providers show varying availability and pricing for the newly issued token.
Why it matters
The eCash hard fork directly impacts Bitcoin holders who self-custody their private keys by granting them a matching balance of ECX tokens. However, questions remain regarding safety protocols, replay protection, and the limited availability of trading platforms for the new digital asset.
