Government data reveals that an ongoing ebola congo outbreak has claimed over 5,000 lives across eight provinces, becoming the nation's deadliest.

Official government data indicates that an ongoing ebola congo outbreak has resulted in more than 5,000 deaths, marking the deadliest occurrence of the rare disease in the country's history. Public health authorities confirmed that the epidemic began in May and surpassed previous records by August. The current case fatality rate stands at 48.6 percent across the affected regions.

The health ministry reports that eight out of 26 provinces are impacted, with confirmed cases exceeding 10,300. The epicentre remains situated in the Ituri province located in the north-east. Because this region is an active conflict zone, containment efforts have faced severe logistical hurdles and heightened difficulties for medical personnel trying to manage the virus.

## Ebola Outbreak Challenges

The United Nations notes that this event represents the 17th occurrence of the disease in the nation's history and stands as the second largest globally. The World Health Organization office in Africa emphasises that ending the crisis requires an ongoing scale-up of key control measures, improved access to impacted territories, and enhanced community outreach. Testing, treatment, and clinical vaccine trials are currently underway.

Adding to operational challenges, violence has repeatedly targeted response teams. Earlier this week, a nurse was killed and another health worker seriously injured following accusations by local youths that they were spreading the virus. Last month, a politician was beaten to death after advocating preventive measures, and the Red Cross reported multiple violent incidents during the initial weeks of the response.

Over 5,000 lives have been lost in the Democratic Republic of Congo's deadliest recorded epidemic.

Regional spillover has been documented. Neighbouring Uganda recorded 20 cases and two deaths shortly after the start, though no new cases have emerged since August while travel restrictions remain active. Kenya has confirmed nine cases and two deaths, while Nigeria recently isolated two suspected cases for testing following an earlier treated case. Meanwhile, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control assesses the infection risk for individuals in Europe as very low.

Why it matters

Government data shows that more than 10,000 people have contracted the rare virus, illustrating the vast scale of public health disruption. The acceleration of fatalities and the ongoing security challenges in the affected zone change the outlook for containment, demanding heightened international intervention and continuous medical support.
