At least seven people have died and more than 100 others were injured after two trains collided outside the Egyptian city of Giza.
A devastating railway disaster has struck Egypt, where a crash involving two passenger trains near the city of Giza resulted in at least seven fatalities and left over one hundred individuals injured. According to the railway authority, the incident occurred when a service travelling from Giza to Fayoum collided with the rear of another stationary train heading from Cairo to Aswan. The impact caused multiple carriages to derail and plunge down an embankment, while some overturned and one appeared to have split in half. Emergency responders rushed to the scene to search overturned carriages for trapped passengers, while cranes were deployed to clear the wreckage and transport links between Giza and Upper Egypt were suspended.
Medical facilities in the local area were placed on heightened alert to cope with a massive influx of patients. The country's health minister reported that victims were receiving treatment for various injuries, including broken bones and head trauma. Tragically, the driver of one of the trains was among those confirmed dead. Officials noted that the death toll could potentially rise as rescue and recovery operations continued in the region, which is located near the site of a historic railway tragedy that occurred in February 2002.
Investigation Launched Into Seven Egypt Tragedy
Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi announced that he had directed state authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision and ensure accountability for any proven negligence. Meanwhile, the public prosecutor's office issued a warning that fatalities might increase as hospitals manage the heavy volume of wounded citizens. Public pressure also emerged on Sunday, with individuals calling for the transport minister to step down following the fatal derailment.
