Over 200,000 demonstrators gathered in Amsterdam to demand stricter trade restrictions on Israel and a halt to arms sales.

A massive demonstration took place in the Netherlands as hundreds of people filled the streets of Amsterdam to demand government intervention regarding Israel's military actions in Gaza. Organised by the Dutch branch of Amnesty International, the turnout was estimated at over 200,000 participants wearing red clothing during the Sunday event.

Demonstrators marched along a thoroughfare that was closed to traffic for the occasion. Participants voiced strong criticism of the Dutch authorities, with attendee Mike van Dongen describing the situation as inhumane and accusing officials of failing to take serious measures. Bystanders and marchers alike chanted slogans such as Free, free Palestine along the route.

Demands for Trade Restrictions and Arms Embargoes

The participants in the Red Line protest called specifically for tighter trade restrictions on Israel and an immediate halt to all arms sales. Sunday's gathering followed a similar demonstration in early October of the previous year, as well as previous marches held in The Hague.

Protesters in Amsterdam urge the Dutch government to halt arms sales and restrict trade with Israel.

Relations between the Netherlands and Israel have experienced considerable strain due to the conflict. A previous foreign minister resigned after failing to secure new sanctions, and a newly formed minority government enacted an import ban on goods from Israeli settlements earlier this year, sparking a diplomatic dispute. Prime Minister Rob Jetten defended his administration's approach at a recent news conference, noting that officials exert continuous political and diplomatic pressure on Israel regarding its agreements.

Why it matters

The large-scale demonstrations highlight ongoing public pressure on European governments to take stronger diplomatic stances in international conflicts. The demands for trade restrictions and arms embargoes directly challenge existing foreign policy approaches, affecting bilateral relations and diplomatic stability in the region.
