Hackers breached control systems at three cold stores holding vital blood products in France, raising temperatures in an escalation of European cyber-attacks.

Hackers gained unauthorized access to control systems at three facilities storing vital medical supplies, escalating a series of digital intrusions targeting refrigeration infrastructure across the continent. Officials in France reported that the malicious actors manipulated temperature controls and defrosting thresholds to dangerous levels at cold storage sites utilized by the national blood service.

The French blood service, known as the EFS, confirmed that the incident occurred overnight. The organization acts as the primary public transfusion operator in the country, managing products such as platelets, plasma, and whole blood destined for over 1,900 hospitals nationwide, ultimately supporting more than one million patients annually. Fortunately, automated alarm systems alerted onsite technicians promptly, enabling staff to intervene before the stored medical products suffered any irreversible damage or spoilage.

Contractors operate the targeted cold storage rooms rather than the EFS directly. Authorities noted that all plasma bags and other sensitive materials housed within the affected areas were successfully relocated to alternative locations. Following the breach, the health ministry and the national cybersecurity agency, ANSSI, were immediately notified, prompting officials to significantly reinforce monitoring protocols across all equipment.

This digital intrusion unfolded concurrently with widespread refrigeration failures impacting supermarkets throughout nearly a dozen nations, including Germany, Italy, Romania, and the United Kingdom. Earlier, countries such as Belgium, Estonia, Ireland, Finland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Sweden experienced similar anomalies. In France alone, previous incidents last month involved attackers seizing control of cooling units across approximately 700 grocery stores. Meanwhile, a regional entity of Crédit Mutuel bank disclosed that it also fell victim to a cyber assault.

Investigations are expanding globally, with the Pentagon currently reviewing suspected digital tampering that caused unexplained refrigerator malfunctions at military base commissaries in the United States. Following emergency consultations between the Italian government and intelligence personnel, European Union representatives emphasized the urgent need for collective resilience against such disruptive operations. Experts suggest the motives remain unclear, with threat intelligence analysts pointing toward either state-backed capability demonstrations or lone-actor involvement.

Why it matters

The coordinated disruption of commercial and medical refrigeration systems highlights severe vulnerabilities in internet-connected infrastructure across nations. As investigators evaluate the possibility of state-sponsored hybrid campaigns, the incidents demonstrate how remotely manageable software can expose essential supply chains to severe physical and logistical risks.
