The monetary regulator in Hong Kong has upgraded its Project Ensemble pilot to permit round-the-clock settlement of tokenized transactions. This development coincides with preparations by the authority to integrate regulated stablecoins into upcoming trials involving tokenized government debt. During an update provided on Monday, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority announced that the EnsembleTX initiative had progressed to a phase supporting continuous, real-value transactions. Officials noted that this modification assists financial institutions and their corporate clients in moving capital globally, handling treasury functions, and managing tokenized assets beyond traditional operating hours. When real-value testing commenced in November 2025, the authority initially relied on the established dollar settlement mechanism while outlining intentions to introduce tokenized central bank money for continuous operations.

Project Ensemble was originally initiated in March 2024 to investigate how banking institutions could settle tokenized trades using wholesale central digital currency. A designated testing environment opened later that year, permitting lenders to link their tokenized deposit systems. Speaking at a financial technology event on Monday, the head of the monetary authority, Eddie Yue, described the introduction of tokenized central bank money as the essential base for continuous settlement. Authorized dealers have already finished secondary-market tests involving short-term debt instruments issued by the regulator, with future plans pointing toward trials that incorporate regulated stablecoins.

Tokenized transactions in Hong Kong can now settle around the clock as trials expand.

Growth in Stablecoin Adoption

In a separate announcement at the same event, banking leadership from HSBC revealed that the institution's recently introduced Hong Kong dollar stablecoin had attracted 50,000 users within approximately ten days of its release. The leadership representative added that the organization aims for a much larger user base as availability widens. While the stablecoin rollout focuses on retail transactions, the settlement initiatives under Project Ensemble primarily address activities between financial institutions and tokenized investments. Additionally, the bank provides tokenized deposits to corporate customers across several jurisdictions to facilitate continuous fund transfers.

The banking institution launched the digital token in late October to handle transfers and merchant payments via a specific mobile application. Millions of application customers are eligible to activate digital wallets for the token, with integration into primary mobile banking services also planned. The institution was counted among the first licensed issuers of digital stablecoins in the territory following the implementation of a regulatory framework that mandates strict standards for reserve backing, redemption processes, and risk management.

Why it matters

The expansion of continuous settlement and the integration of regulated stablecoins alter how financial institutions and corporate clients manage global funds and tokenized investments outside conventional business hours. These regulatory and banking updates directly affect market participants engaging with digital assets and treasury operations in the region.
