As the conflict in Sudan triggers severe food shortages and famine warnings, displaced people struggle to survive amid dwindling aid.
The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has displaced millions and devastated the country. For many vulnerable citizens, including displaced sudanese families, daily survival has become an uphill battle against hunger and shrinking humanitarian assistance.
Fifty-year-old Aisha Adam fled her home in Khartoum when war erupted, eventually reaching a displacement centre in Port Sudan. Initially, she received assistance from organizations and local agencies, but the volume of aid has dropped significantly. To prevent starvation for her orphaned grandson and nephew, Adam now rises early to make and sell traditional Sudanese fried pastry at a nearby market, though her daily profits are barely enough to cover essential ingredients like flour, oil, and charcoal. Meat has vanished from her shopping list, replaced by lentils and rice, while her greatest fear remains falling ill without money for treatment.
Sudan faces a mounting food crisis as displaced people struggle against famine warnings.
This personal hardship reflects a broader national emergency. The World Food Programme announced that funding shortages forced it to cut monthly food assistance for hundreds of thousands of displaced people. Across the nation, millions face acute hunger, and food security continues to deteriorate dangerously in several regions.
At the al-Suraiha 8 displacement camp in al-Obeid, camp supervisor Esraa Mohammed noted that residents lack basic necessities and severe acute malnutrition affects dozens of children. Many arrivals reach the camp wearing torn clothes and carrying nothing, occasionally forced to eat tree leaves during their journeys due to extreme fear and scarcity.
Why it matters
The deepening food crisis and decreasing humanitarian support directly affect millions of displaced people across Sudan who rely on aid for basic survival. With famine warnings spreading and organizations cutting assistance, vulnerable populations face acute hunger and severe malnutrition without immediate intervention.
