Saudi-Led Coalition Intercepts Missile as Fighting Rages in Yemen

Air defences intercepted a ballistic missile targeting southern Saudi Arabia as heavy fighting continued along multiple fronts in Yemen.

Air defences operated by the Saudi-led coalition successfully intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile directed at the southern region of Saudi Arabia on Monday. This development followed the destruction of an explosive-laden drone in the same area on Sunday evening, according to statements from coalition spokesperson Major General Turki al-Maliki. In response to the aerial threats, the Saudi Civil Defence authority temporarily issued alerts warning residents of potential danger across Abha, Khamis Mushait, Taif, and Najran, while cautioning the public against publishing or sharing media related to these attacks.

Meanwhile, intense ground battles persisted in Yemen as government forces intensified their campaign against Houthi fighters in the northern al-Jawf governorate. Military officials reported conducting over twelve hundred targeting operations against insurgent positions and heavy weaponry over a twenty-four-hour period. These ongoing military engagements extend into neighbouring Marib and al-Bayda, where the internationally recognised government is attempting to reclaim lost territory from the Iran-aligned faction.

Escalating Humanitarian Concerns in Taiz

Amid the military escalation, the humanitarian situation in southwest Yemen has deteriorated severely. Houthi forces have maintained a tight siege around the city of Taiz, obstructing the delivery of essential supplies including food, fuel, and medical goods. Local authorities reported that a significant number of health facilities have suspended operations, placing immense strain on the remaining medical infrastructure in the country's third-largest city, which houses approximately one million residents.

Why it matters

The ongoing conflict involving the saudi-led coalition and Houthi forces directly impacts regional security and exacerbates a severe humanitarian crisis for millions of civilians inside Yemen. Disruptions to vital supply routes and attacks on infrastructure continue to worsen local living conditions and restrict access to basic health services.
