Law enforcement authorities have launched an investigation following the death of Hubert Aiwanger, the deputy leader of Bavaria.

Authorities in Germany have opened a formal investigation following the death of Hubert Aiwanger, a prominent regional politician who was discovered deceased inside a hotel room in Berlin. Law enforcement officials and prosecutors announced that an inquiry is currently underway to establish the exact cause and specific circumstances surrounding the sudden passing of the 55-year-old official, while also working to rule out any potential third-party involvement.

Police stated that the politician was located in his accommodation within the Berlin-Mitte district on Wednesday. According to reports from the Bild daily, Aiwanger had traveled to the capital city to participate in an office opening event for his political organization, but ultimately missed the gathering after reporting that he felt unwell. His body was subsequently discovered by police officers at the hotel location.

Authorities have launched an official investigation to determine the exact cause of death for Hubert Aiwanger.

Markus Soeder, the Bavarian state premier, characterized the passing of the senior regional official as a profound tragedy. Expressing deep shock, Soeder extended condolences on behalf of the regional government to the family and children of the deceased minister. Aiwanger served as the head of the populist Free Voters party and held the position of economy minister for the southern state of Bavaria. Under his leadership since 2006, the party successfully entered the regional government coalition in 2018 as a junior partner to Soeder's Christian Social Union.

Throughout his political career, hubert aiwanger remained a central figure in regional politics, though he also faced significant national scrutiny. In 2023, media reports linked him to an antisemitic pamphlet distributed during his school years in which Auschwitz was referenced. Aiwanger denied authoring the document, though he acknowledged possessing copies during his youth, and he later issued an apology while refusing to resign from his official governmental duties.

Why it matters

The unexpected death of a senior regional leader creates a sudden political vacuum within the coalition government of southern Bavaria. This sudden development impacts regional governance structures and leaves his political party facing a significant transition following his long tenure as leader.
