India's chemical and petrochemical sector aims for global growth, backed by rising investments, better infrastructure, and enhanced manufacturing capacity.

India's chemical industry is positioning itself for major international growth, driven by rising investments, enhanced manufacturing capabilities, and stronger industrial infrastructure. The Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals, operating under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers, reported that the nation holds the sixth position globally as a chemical producer and ranks fourth across Asia.

The sector currently commands an estimated valuation of $220 billion. Projections indicate that this market value will climb to $300 billion by the conclusion of the decade and reach $1 trillion by 2040. Serving as a crucial backbone, the industry provides vital raw materials to numerous sectors, including pharmaceuticals, textiles, automotive manufacturing, electronics, construction, and consumer merchandise.

India's Chemical Industry Growth Drivers

India functions as the world's second-largest manufacturer and exporter of dyes while securing the third position globally for agrochemical exports. The ecosystem comprises approximately 13,000 large industrial units alongside 445,000 micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises. To bolster local production and draw capital, government authorities are advancing dedicated chemical parks, upgrading infrastructure, broadening financing avenues, and encouraging technological innovation.

To safeguard consumers, elevate quality standards, and restrict inferior imports, officials have implemented targeted regulations. A total of 37 Quality Control Orders remain active to ensure standard compliance. Furthermore, the establishment of 18 Centres of Excellence has driven academic and industrial research, resulting in the filing of 85 patents, the publication of over 600 research papers, and the creation of 105 novel technologies and products.

India's chemical and petrochemical sector is projected to reach $1 trillion by 2040.

Why it matters

The ongoing expansion of India's chemical and petrochemical sector directly impacts domestic manufacturing, agriculture, and industrial development by securing a reliable supply of essential materials. For industries ranging from pharmaceuticals to textiles, these infrastructure upgrades and quality controls ensure enhanced competitiveness in both domestic and international markets.
