Nationwide Building Society has introduced a member-exclusive savings bond offering a 5.3% interest rate over a 30-month fixed term.
Nationwide Building Society has officially confirmed that Nationwide launches new savings account options for its existing members. The newly introduced Member Exclusive Bond offers an interest rate of 5.3%, positioning it as a competitive option in the current financial climate. This product is specifically designed to reward the loyalty of the building societyโs more than 19 million members.
Understanding the Member Exclusive Bond
The account features a 30-month fixed-term structure, requiring savers to commit their funds for the duration of the period. Deposits can range from as little as ยฃ1 up to a maximum of ยฃ10,000. According to the institution, an individual who deposits the full ยฃ10,000 would accrue ยฃ1,381 in interest by the end of the term. To be eligible, applicants must be at least 16 years old and have held a qualifying Nationwide or Virgin Money account since at least November 2, 2023.
There are specific operational constraints for this bond. Savers are permitted to deposit funds only during the initial 14-day window following the opening of the account. Furthermore, each member is restricted to holding only one such bond. Once the account is established, the capital is locked away and cannot be accessed until the term expires. For those who may require liquidity for their savings, the provider suggests that alternative options, such as instant-access accounts, may be more suitable. The account can be opened via the Nationwide mobile application, through the website, or by visiting a physical branch.
Nationwideโs new 30-month bond offers a 5.3% fixed interest rate exclusively for existing members.
Why it matters
The launch of this product occurred just days before the Bank of England announced an increase in the base rate to 4%. This timing is significant as it aligns with broader market trends where financial institutions have been adjusting their offerings in anticipation of rate hikes.
According to Katie Horne at the savings platform Flagstone, banks have been incorporating expected rate increases into their fixed-term products for several months. Consequently, industry experts suggest that the 5.3% rate remains attractive even following the recent base rate adjustment. While a single 0.25% increase in the base rate is not expected to shift fixed-term market rates significantly, this account remains on par with the highest-paying options currently available for two-to-three-year terms.
