Military operations and widespread demolitions across Hebron, Gaza, and southern Lebanon have left thousands displaced and entire neighborhoods in ruins.
Recent developments in the region have brought renewed attention to israel hebron news as military operations expand across the occupied West Bank. Following an incident where two Israeli soldiers were killed at a checkpoint near Hebron, the city and surrounding governorate have been placed under strict siege, affecting roughly 800,000 Palestinians. Residents report being ordered to leave their homes in the middle of the night with little notice, returning only to find black X marks on their doors or troops turning their properties into military outposts.
According to UNRWA, nearly 5,000 Palestinians have been displaced in Hebron in just over a week, a measure the agency describes as collective punishment violating international law. This builds on years of restrictive permit systems and demolitions tracked by OCHA. UNRWA's West Bank director, Roland Friedrich, noted that these scenes mirror the mass displacement seen in Jenin, Tulkarem, and Nur Shams in early 2025, where the Iron Wall operation destroyed over half of the residential buildings in those refugee camps.
Widespread demolitions and military operations across Hebron, Gaza, and Lebanon have displaced hundreds of thousands of people.
Investigations by Forensic Architecture have documented systematic destruction across multiple camps, utilizing armored bulldozers and controlled demolitions to widen roads for military vehicles. In Gaza, the scale of destruction is significantly larger, with UNOSAT estimating that approximately 82 percent of all structures in the Strip have been damaged or destroyed by June 2026. Displaced families now crowd into makeshift tents, damaged buildings, and beach shelters, facing severe risks as another winter approaches without reliable water or sanitation.
Why it matters
From Hebron and Jenin to Gaza and southern Lebanon, the ongoing destruction does more than displace families; it fundamentally alters the landscape and leaves residents with nothing to return to. With neighborhoods reduced to rubble and ongoing military occupation in areas like southern Lebanon, the demolitions raise serious concerns regarding international law and the long-term future of displaced populations.
