Governor Khaled Dudin confirms that Palestinian security forces have regained control of Hebron after a 10-day Israeli military operation that displaced thousands of residents.

The governor of Hebron announced on Monday that Israeli military forces have withdrawn from the city, located in the southern occupied West Bank, concluding a 10-day siege. The withdrawal marks a significant shift in the status of the area, as questions regarding whether is hebron in israel or palestine continue to be a central point of international discourse. Following the departure of military units, Palestinian security forces have assumed full control of the city and surrounding regions.

The impact of the military operation

The Israeli military had initiated the siege on October 23, following a shooting incident involving two Palestinians that resulted in the deaths of two Israeli soldiers and left three others wounded. In response, Israeli forces neutralized the two attackers. Over the course of the subsequent 10-day operation, the military enforced strict closures on the city and neighboring villages. Reports from the Hebron Governorate indicate that soldiers seized various Palestinian homes, repurposing them as military outposts.

The operation resulted in widespread disruption, including the forced displacement of over 3,300 Palestinians, with particularly high impacts reported in the Al-Jalda and Ein Deir Baha areas. Beyond residential displacement, the governorate documented the demolition of 15 homes and various other structures, including commercial properties. The military presence also caused significant damage to local infrastructure and hindered the daily operations of educational institutions.

Governor Khaled Dudin stated that local authorities are currently assessing the situation to facilitate the safe return of families who were compelled to vacate their homes during the lockdown. He emphasized that Palestinian security forces are monitoring the region closely to ensure the necessary conditions are met for residents to return to their properties.

Why it matters

The withdrawal is a critical development for the thousands of residents who were displaced or affected by the destruction of their homes and businesses. By allowing families to return to their properties, the local government aims to begin the process of addressing the damage caused to the local economy and infrastructure during the 10-day period. This event highlights the ongoing instability in the region, affecting the lives and livelihoods of those living under occupation.
