Three progressive Democrats endorsed by Zohran Mamdani are expected to win their congressional races following successful primary campaigns.

As New York City prepares for the upcoming midterm elections, three progressive candidates backed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani are poised to secure seats in Congress. These hopefuls—Claire Valdez, Brad Lander, and Darializa Avila Chevalier—emerged from a series of competitive Democratic primaries earlier this year, building on a wave of political momentum that seeks to shift the party's platform toward more radical policy goals.

Mamdani congressional candidates and their platforms

The candidates have aligned themselves with ambitious goals, including the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the implementation of a government-run healthcare system, and a cessation of US military aid to Israel. While their platforms overlap, their political origins vary. Brad Lander, a former city comptroller, brings experience from within the municipal government. His campaign against incumbent Dan Goldman drew significant national attention, centering on the conflict in Gaza. Lander, who identifies as both a Zionist and a proponent of pro-Palestinian activism, has faced scrutiny after being detained by Israeli forces during a recent volunteer trip to the West Bank.

Darializa Avila Chevalier, a community organiser who unseated long-time incumbent Adriano Espaillat, has focused her platform on redirecting military spending toward domestic needs like childcare. Her approach is rooted in her past advocacy work in the occupied West Bank. Meanwhile, Claire Valdez, a state assemblymember and Democratic Socialists of America member, entered the race with a background in labour organising. She advocates for federal legislation to strengthen union rights and the establishment of national rent control.

Progressive candidates endorsed by Zohran Mamdani are heavily favoured to win their upcoming congressional elections.

As the election approaches, these candidates face the challenge of transitioning from campaign rhetoric to the practicalities of governance. While the primary elections served as the definitive tests for these candidates in their heavily Democratic districts, the shift to federal office will require navigating the complex interests of Congress and the White House. The newcomers must now determine how to prioritize their ambitious agendas once they take office.

Why it matters

The victory of these three progressives signals a potential shift in the Democratic Party’s legislative priorities. By moving from local government and activism into the halls of Congress, these figures aim to translate grassroots demands into federal policy, potentially altering the US stance on international aid and domestic social programs.
