A Footscray man faces a murder charge following the fatal stabbing of a HungryPanda delivery rider during a bike tampering confrontation in Melbourne.
A resident of Footscray has been formally charged with murder following the tragic death of a food delivery worker in the heart of Melbourne late last week. The incident occurred on Friday night when forty-seven-year-old Feng Jianming, who worked for the delivery platform HungryPanda, and another colleague confronted an individual who was allegedly interfering with their bicycles in the central business district.
An altercation quickly escalated, during which a fifty-one-year-old suspect allegedly stabbed both delivery riders. Emergency responders hurried to Frederick Way to address the emergency, but the victim could not be revived. His thirty-four-year-old colleague sustained severe injuries and remained hospitalised as the new week began. Law enforcement officers took the suspect into custody on Saturday, and by Monday morning, authorities formally charged him with one count of murder alongside a charge of intentionally causing serious injury. He was remanded in custody ahead of a scheduled court appearance before the Melbourne magistrates court on Monday.
The devastating event sent shockwaves through local communities in Australia as well as international gig worker networks. Over the weekend, grieving members of the public placed floral tributes and handwritten notes near the state library to honour the fallen worker. Some messages expressed deep sorrow for his surviving relatives, while others conveyed intense anger regarding public safety concerns. Meanwhile, a community fundraising initiative launched by the Melbourne Chinatown Business Association successfully gathered nearly three hundred and ninety thousand dollars by Monday morning to assist the victim's family with funeral costs and emergency travel.

Community Response and Support
The employer of the victim confirmed that corporate assistance is being provided to help the bereaved relatives navigate visa processes, financial aid, insurance claims, and funeral arrangements. The deceased worker originally hailed from China's Shaanxi Province and had resided in Australia for approximately nine years, supporting his wife, two children, and four parents through his diligent labor.
Why it matters
This tragic incident has deeply affected gig worker communities and sparked widespread discussions regarding the safety and security of delivery personnel working late hours in urban centers. It highlights the profound vulnerabilities faced by platform workers and prompts urgent community attention toward worker protection and public safety standards.
