Democratic socialists achieved a major political breakthrough in Los Angeles, highlighted by Nithya Raman winning the mayoral election.

A remarkable political shift unfolded in Los Angeles this week as democratic socialists secured powerful positions across the city, most notably with Nithya Raman winning the nithya raman mayor race to succeed Karen Bass. Raman became the first democratic socialist to serve on the city council back in 2020, and her historic mayoral victory marks a major milestone for the progressive wing of the party, leaving Americaโ€™s two largest cities under democratic socialist leadership.

Beyond the mayor's office, voters supported numerous other candidates endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America Los Angeles chapter. Marissa Roy secured the city attorney position, while Angela Gonzales-Torres won a U.S. House seat by defeating incumbent Jimmy Gomez. Additional socialist victories on school boards and the Burbank city council established the west coast's first socialist-majority municipal council.

Democratic socialists swept key Los Angeles offices, led by Nithya Raman's historic mayoral victory.

These election outcomes followed an extensive campaign effort where volunteers knocked on more than 110,000 doors. The local DSA chapter expanded its membership significantly, reaching over 8,000 members amid the recent electoral success. Analysts noted that voter frustration regarding the current municipal administration, particularly concerning the handling of the Palisades fire, contributed to the incumbent mayor's defeat.

Despite internal debates and a complicated endorsement process involving the local chapter, Raman received crucial volunteer support during her campaign. Other progressive candidates also achieved substantial margins of victory, with Roy capturing over 67 percent of the vote and Gonzales-Torres winning her congressional race with 60.6 percent.

Why it matters

This sweeping electoral shift alters the political landscape of Los Angeles by placing democratic socialists in some of the most influential municipal and federal positions in the city. The results demonstrate growing voter dissatisfaction with traditional political establishments and signal a new era of progressive governance that will impact local policy decisions and community representation.
