Authorities in Uttar Pradesh have arrested three individuals and confiscated significant quantities of narcotics in two separate operations near the India-Nepal border.

Law enforcement agencies have intensified their efforts to curb cross-border drug trafficking, resulting in the successful apprehension of suspects and the recovery of illicit substances in Maharajganj. When authorities conduct operations where police seized vehicles and narcotics, it underscores the ongoing challenges in maintaining security along the international boundary.

Operations where police seized vehicles

In the first operation, the Thuthibari police, supported by the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) from Siddharthnagar and Gorakhpur, acted on intelligence to intercept a Scorpio vehicle near Naubari village. Officers arrested two individuals, identified as 49-year-old Naimun Nisha and 50-year-old Rajendra Gaur, both from Kushinagar district. During the search, police discovered 122.975 kg of ganja, valued at approximately Rs 60 lakh in the international market. A case has been filed at the Thuthibari police station under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Records indicate that Gaur has previous narcotics-related cases registered against him in Kushinagar and Basti districts.

In a separate incident on November 4, a joint team comprising Sonauli police and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) personnel conducted a search near a primary school in Fareni village. They arrested a 19-year-old Nepal national, Rohit Maurya, a resident of Rupandehi district, who was found in possession of 57.24 grams of heroin. A motorcycle registered in Nepal was also confiscated during this operation. Maurya has been charged under the NDPS Act at the Sonauli police station and has since been presented before a local court for legal proceedings.

Authorities arrested three suspects and seized over 123 kg of ganja and heroin near the India-Nepal border.

Why it matters

These operations highlight the persistent threat of cross-border smuggling and the collaborative efforts between local police and specialized units to secure the region. The seizure of vehicles and narcotics disrupts illegal supply chains, affecting regional security and public safety for communities living along the India-Nepal border.
