Singapore Airlines has revealed its new Premium Economy and Economy Class seats tied to the delayed Boeing 777-9 aircraft program.
Singapore Airlines recently showcased its upcoming Premium Economy and Economy Class cabins during a New Travel Experience unveiling event. These new seats are tied directly to the introduction of the Boeing 777-9 aircraft, a program that has faced significant development delays and delivery timeline uncertainty. Boeing is currently hoping to secure aircraft certification early next year, with the first deliveries anticipated before the end of 2027. ## Hands Singapore Experience
Visitors at the preview got hands singapore insights into the new cabin hardware, though the premium First and Business Class spaces required escorted tours. The upcoming cabins will feature two distinct variations based on the inflight entertainment system. The first variant uses the Panasonic NEXT system introduced in 2017, while the second variant utilizes the newer Panasonic Astrova system, which offers 4K OLED displays and is 30 percent lighter than earlier hardware.
For Premium Economy passengers, the differences between the two variants are minor, involving trade-offs between USB-A ports and OLED displays, while both offer USB-C and AC power. However, Economy passengers face a bigger trade-off on the second variant, where the upgrade to an OLED display comes at the expense of both USB-A ports and AC power, leaving USB-C as the only charging option. Furthermore, 34 retrofitted Airbus A350-900LHs and seven A350-900ULRs will only receive a limited cabin refresh rather than these brand-new seats.
Singapore Airlines' new cabins are tied to the delayed Boeing 777-9 delivery timeline.
Manufactured by Collins Aerospace and styled by Factorydesign, the new Premium Economy seats feature full-grain premium leather, blue-grey upholstery with burnt orange accents, and a four-way adjustable headrest. Notably, it is the first time all Premium Economy seats feature an integrated footrest rather than a fold-down version from the seat in front. The seat measures 19 inches wide in a 2-4-2 configuration, though reviewers noted a complete lack of privacy between neighboring passengers.
Why it matters
These new seating products represent much-needed cabin upgrades for Singapore Airlines passengers, but the protracted delays of the Boeing 777-9 mean that widespread adoption is still years away. With limited retrofits planned for existing aircraft and uncertain delivery schedules, most travelers will not experience these new seats in the near future.
