Local traders say they cannot afford high stall fees at the Christmas market following a change of operator, with quotes reaching up to ยฃ15,000.

Local business owners claim they have been priced out of participating in this upcoming Christmas market event after a new operator took over management responsibilities. Affected individuals voiced their concerns directly to Liverpool City Council leader Liam Robinson, explaining that taking space at the attraction has simply become financially impossible for them.

Anthony Grice stated that he received a quote of ยฃ12,000 to secure a stall at the St George's Plateau location. Meanwhile, jeweller Alex Healy shared during a radio discussion that her small hut would cost between ยฃ14,000 and ยฃ15,000, making it completely unaffordable amid ongoing cost-of-living pressures and a desire to keep prices fair for her customers. Opposition politicians also criticized the high fees as a heavy burden given current economic conditions.

Understanding the Traders Christmas Concerns

Council leader Liam Robinson explained that the local authority was fully aware of the pricing structure implemented by the new operator, Underbelly, when the company secured the contract based on its quality, price track record, and previous experience in other locations. Robinson noted that the council is set to receive a portion of the generated income and expressed a willingness to meet with affected entrepreneurs to explore potential support options. Additionally, a city council spokesperson highlighted that alternative trading spaces will be made available for local artisans at street markets on Basnett Street, Lark Lane, and Woolton Village during the festive season.

High stall fees have left local business owners unable to afford spaces at the Christmas market.

Why it matters

This situation affects local stall holders and small business owners who rely on seasonal events for visibility and revenue. The debate highlights the economic challenges faced by independent traders when major event management contracts shift to commercial operators.
