Annual reports reveal executives at Snowy Hydro received bonuses totaling over $750,000 as the project's cost reaches $25bn.

Executives at the troubled Snowy Hydro company collectively banked bonuses worth a combined $751,925 in the last financial year, despite its renewable energy project blowing out significantly from its initial budget. Annual reports show that while several high-ranking personnel received substantial extra payments, the chief executive opted against taking the additional cash. The company’s chief financial officer received a $215,440 bonus on top of a pay packet worth $828,839, according to the annual report for the 2025-2026 financial year. Meanwhile, the chief operating officer pocketed a $255,570 bonus with a base salary of $1,050,503, and the chief commercial officer took home a $280,915 bonus alongside a base salary of $1,142,268. However, chief executive Dennis Barnes, who holds a base salary of $1,845,126, recommended to the board that he receive no short-term incentive payment for the period. A Snowy Hydro spokesperson stated that short-term incentives are tied to a range of performance outcomes across various parts of the enterprise. ## Snowy Hydro 2.0 The long-delayed infrastructure initiative known as Snowy Hydro 2.0 will not be completed until the end of the decade and is projected to cost taxpayers as much as $25bn. Initially proposed in 2017 by the Turnbull government with a $2bn price tag, the project inside the Kosciuszko National Park has seen costs steadily climb. It was previously revised to almost $13bn in 2023 with a scheduled completion by the end of 2028, but commissioning is now pushed to 2029. In a separate development within Australia's public sector, the national science agency CSIRO awarded its chief executive Doug Hilton a bonus of $198,517 in addition to his $789,391 base salary. This award occurred during a period when the agency shrank its workforce by several hundred people, contributing to more than 1,100 job cuts over two years. A CSIRO spokesperson noted that the board determined the annual value of the payment based on key performance indicators, while bonus payments for other senior executives were removed previously to align with the public service. > Snowy Hydro executives received substantial bonuses while the renewable project faced major cost increases and delays. ## Why it matters The financial disclosures highlight the internal compensation practices of major public energy and science entities during periods of major organizational change and significant taxpayer-funded project escalations. For stakeholders and the public, these reports provide transparency into executive remuneration alongside workforce reductions and ballooning infrastructure expenses.
