Surrey County Council has reopened its Warm Welcome initiative, providing residents with access to community spaces, hot drinks, and support services throughout the colder months.
Surrey County Council has officially launched its annual Warm Welcome scheme, an initiative designed to provide residents with safe, heated spaces as temperatures drop. Many residents often search for public venues near me during the winter months, and this project aims to address that need by opening over 100 locations across the county. These sites, which include local libraries and various community hubs, are now available to the public and will continue to operate through 31 March 2027.
The Warm Welcome scheme provides free hot drinks and community connection in over 100 Surrey venues.
Mark Nuti, the cabinet member for health, wellbeing and public health, noted that maintaining a comfortable temperature at home has become a significant challenge for many. He emphasized that the initiative is built on a foundation of kindness and connection, ensuring that no individual has to face isolation or the cold alone. While each participating venue may offer a unique atmosphere or specific local amenities, they are all united by the common goal of providing a warm environment and a cup of tea to those who need it.
Accessing public venues for support
Beyond providing a physical space to stay warm, the project serves as a gateway to essential resources. Since its inception in 2022, the scheme has expanded its scope to include energy advice and guidance on accessing various support services. The program is currently supported by the Crisis and Resilience Fund, a government-backed initiative specifically aimed at assisting individuals and families on lower incomes.
Residents interested in utilizing these services can find a comprehensive list of participating locations via an interactive map hosted on the Surrey County Council website. This digital tool allows users to identify the nearest facility quickly, ensuring that help remains accessible to those who need it most throughout the autumn and winter seasons.
Why it matters
The annual scheme provides a vital social and physical lifeline for residents struggling with the rising costs of heating their homes. By transforming libraries and community centers into hubs of support, the council is actively working to reduce social isolation and provide practical assistance to vulnerable populations during the harshest months of the year.
