Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy believes Democratic victories in US midterm elections will increase aid and pressure on Russia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that recent Democratic gains in the United States midterm elections could increase backing for Kyiv. Speaking to a German broadcaster, Zelenskyy mentioned that the shift in legislative control offers hope for a balanced power dynamic and stronger assistance for Ukraine in its conflict.
The election results handed control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives to the Democratic Party following a rebuke of Donald Trump and his political allies. Zelenskyy noted that Democrats have clearly expressed support for Ukraine and for restoring strong ties between the United States and Europe, which he believes could influence Russian leadership.
Increased US congressional support could positively impact Russian President Vladimir Putin and the ongoing conflict.
Relations between Kyiv and Washington faced friction following an Oval Office meeting in early 2025 where Trump accused the Ukrainian leader of being unappreciative of US aid. Recent weeks also saw Trump implement policies favorable to Moscow, including a Russian diesel import deal, waiving congressional sanctions, and delays in interceptor missile shipments.
European officials expressed mixed reactions to the shifting American political landscape. European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas voiced hope that the new Congress would maintain backing for Ukraine and increase pressure on Moscow. Meanwhile, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz remained skeptical about whether Trump would alter his approach after largely bypassing Congress over the previous two years. However, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul suggested the election outcome might generate renewed discussion regarding reduced aid levels.
Diplomacy Moves Forward Ahead Of Meetings
While diplomatic discussions continue independently of congressional timelines, US envoy Steve Witkoff announced that delegations from Ukraine and Russia will convene in Abu Dhabi to discuss security arrangements and ending the war. Zelenskyy confirmed he held detailed discussions with Witkoff and Jared Kushner prior to the scheduled meetings, emphasizing that negotiations must advance swiftly.
Why it matters
European officials urge the new US Congress to step up pressure on Russia to end the four-and-a-half-year war. This political shift in Washington may alter international diplomatic efforts and foreign aid levels as European and American leaders reassess their joint strategies regarding the conflict.
