Sudanese artists fight to save cultural heritage

Displaced by conflict, Sudanese artists are using their creative talents to preserve traditions, support communities, and counter division.

Amid the ongoing conflict that erupted in April 2023, displaced Sudanese artists and cultural workers are striving to preserve their country's rich traditions and heritage. Many creators have lost their homes, workspaces, and tools, forcing them to relocate to safer areas like Port Sudan. Despite these immense challenges, cultural initiatives and community groups continue to provide vital support and platforms for expression.

Awad Haroun, a visual artist and theatre director who fled Khartoum North, lost his workspace and equipment. In Port Sudan, he has participated in festival performances and led traditional arts workshops. Similarly, musician and filmmaker Asim Abdelaziz left El Obeid due to escalating violence and now lives in a shelter for displaced artists. He continues to use music to address social issues and founded a project to archive traditional sounds from across the nation.

Displaced Sudanese artists are using creativity and culture to preserve their national identity amid ongoing war.

Organisations like the local Artists and Writers Union, along with UNESCO and the Ministry of Culture and Information, have stepped in to provide shelter and support for hundreds of displaced artists and cultural professionals. These groups help sustain Sudan's cultural life, ensuring that artists have spaces to create and collaborate.

## studios and creative spaces

While physical creative studios have been destroyed or abandoned, the resolve of Sudan's artistic community remains unbroken. Through theatre, visual arts, music, and storytelling, these creators are working to bring communities together, offer children outlets for expression, and counter hate speech and deep-seated social divisions.

Why it matters

The ongoing destruction of Sudan's cultural sector impacts the preservation of regional heritage and threatens the livelihoods of numerous artists. Cultural preservation efforts matter because they maintain community identity and social cohesion during times of severe displacement and conflict.
