US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded significant activity during the third quarter, even as recent market sessions brought notable withdrawals. According to data from Farside Investors, US spot bitcoin etfs saw outflows reaching $430 million on November 5. This recent shift follows a period of heavy accumulation earlier in the year that sparked widespread discussion regarding digital asset scarcity.
Data from a November 2 report by 21Shares indicates that buyers of these funds added 79,800 tokens during the third quarter. In comparison, newly mined supply during the same timeframe stood at 41,300 tokens. While this dynamic supports arguments surrounding asset scarcity, analysts note that it provides limited reassurance regarding current sustained demand. Specifically, the majority of this purchasing activity occurred within two brief periods between August 17 and August 27, and from September 21 to September 25, accounting for 91 percent of measured inflows.
Fund purchases exceeding mining output do not establish how much supply buyers must absorb at a given price.
Assessing a potential supply squeeze involves looking beyond new issuance alone, as existing holders can also move coins. The 21Shares report highlighted a reduction of 248,000 tokens in long-term-holder balances over the third quarter. However, this metric reflects a net balance decline rather than a measured total of executed market sales. Accounting precision remains difficult, as fund ownership and age-based holder categories are not established as mutually exclusive.
Additional directional checks from Glassnode metrics illustrate rolling 30-day supply changes within specific cohorts. A capture from November 6 showed a negative reading of approximately 151,885 tokens for the long-term group. This negative measurement indicates that spending by older cohorts outweighed the maturation of newer coins into the group, rather than representing a single day of total distribution.
Why it matters
The balance between fund inflows and older-holder distribution remains central to understanding digital asset market dynamics. For investors evaluating market health, a convincing recovery signal relies on repeated fund inflows alongside slower net distribution from established holders, while persistent redemptions and ongoing distribution could weaken the current outlook.
