A small Devon zoo is celebrating the birth of critically endangered pied tamarin twins, marking a rare breeding success for the European region.

A compact wildlife facility in the United Kingdom has announced the birth of two critically endangered primates, describing the arrivals as extra special for the conservation team. Born on September 29, the twin pied tamarins were delivered to their mother Bobby and father Pedra at the Shaldon Wildlife Trust located in Devon.

Directors at the trust explained that the species is among the most vulnerable primates native to South America. Because these animals are exceptionally delicate, breeding them successfully remains a difficult undertaking. The new parents and their infants require calm surroundings and specialized management to thrive.

Keepers deliberately delayed publicizing the births for several weeks to ensure the young family experienced complete peace and quiet. According to the facility, the infant twins are currently progressing well and have begun riding on the backs of their parents while investigating their enclosure.

Extra special breeding success

Director Zak Showell noted that for an establishment of their scale to achieve this milestone is a remarkable achievement. The trust stands as one of only two European facilities to successfully breed the species during the year. In their natural habitat, the primates are confined to a rapidly diminishing tract of rainforest near Manaus in Brazil, and they hold a critically endangered classification on the International Union for Conservation and Nature Red List.

Why it matters

This captive breeding achievement highlights ongoing conservation efforts for one of South America's most threatened primate species. With wild populations restricted to a shrinking pocket of Brazilian rainforest, successful European zoo breeding programs help maintain awareness and support the preservation of delicate endangered species.
