Severe storms and heavy rain brought life-threatening flash flooding to the Georgia-Tennessee border area, forcing dozens of emergency water rescues.
Communities situated along the Georgia-Tennessee border faced dangerous conditions late Wednesday and into Thursday morning as heavy rain triggered severe flash flooding. The National Weather Service issued urgent warnings for the region, urging individuals to seek higher ground immediately as up to five inches of rainfall accumulated in parts of north central Georgia by Thursday morning.
The town of McCaysville, located directly across the Toccoa River from Copperhill, Tennessee, experienced significant inundation. Local officials reported water levels reaching six to seven feet high in certain areas. First responders faced severe challenges, utilizing boats and aviation assets to conduct dozens of rescues amidst stretched local resources that had earlier responded to lightning-induced structure fires.
Governor Brian Kemp announced a coordinated multi-agency response involving state and local teams, Tennessee first responders, and game wardens. More than thirty people were safely evacuated by boat during the morning hours, while authorities actively searched for individuals potentially trapped in vehicles swept away by rising creeks. Officials emphasized that receding precipitation does not eliminate danger, noting that floodwaters remain extremely hazardous.
Road closures heavily impacted the area, leading to student cancellations for Fannin and Gilmer county schools. Evacuation warnings were additionally issued for residents in Copperhill, Tennessee, as authorities continued monitoring the severe weather impact.
