The international ice hockey governing body warns of practical and sporting hurdles as multiple nations refuse to play against Russia.

The International Ice Hockey Federation has confirmed it disagrees with a recent legal ruling regarding ice russia, highlighting severe operational and logistical hurdles following the decision. Last week, the Court of Arbitration for Sport overturned the governing body's prior ban on Russian teams participating in international events, a restriction originally implemented after the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

The federation noted that immediate reintegration creates numerous complications, including security arrangements, visa protocols, transport constraints, and tournament format adjustments. This ruling has triggered widespread resistance. National associations in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and the Czech Republic announced their squads will forfeit matches against Russia during the upcoming men's World Championships in Germany. Similar boycotts were declared by Finland and Latvia, while Turku in Finland threatened to withdraw from hosting the 2028 World Junior Championship.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that Russia and Belarus will be excluded from the upcoming World Junior Championship in Alberta. In response, Moscow condemned the decision, with Russian diplomat Oleg Stepanov accusing Canada of politicising youth athletics.

The international ice hockey federation warned that readmitting Russian teams creates severe sporting and logistical challenges.

Main sponsor threatens action

Meanwhile, main tournament sponsor Skoda Auto indicated it would review its sponsorship arrangement if Russian teams participate in the annual competition. The car manufacturer, a subsidiary of Volkswagen that has sponsored the event since 1993, stated that Russia's reinstatement conflicts with its core corporate values. While the company did not disclose its exact financial contribution, its 2025 records indicate support through electric vehicle loans and bespoke crystal trophies.

Officials stated they remain in discussions with tournament organisers, national associations, and host cities to determine appropriate next steps.

Why it matters

The dispute impacts international tournament planning, sponsorship commitments, and the diplomatic standing of global sporting events. Decisions made by national federations and corporate sponsors could reshape how governing bodies handle eligibility disputes involving international conflicts.
