Iranian forces claim multiple oil tankers and a tugboat were damaged by mines in the Strait of Hormuz, as regional tensions with the U.S. and Israel continue to escalate.

Iranian military forces have reported that at least five oil tankers and a tugboat have been damaged in the Strait of Hormuz, signaling that shipping remains in significant peril as the conflict involving the United States and Israel continues. Since the war began in late February, Tehran has implemented severe restrictions on traffic through this strategic waterway, which typically facilitates the movement of approximately one-fifth of global oil consumption. The latest reports regarding Iran Hormuz news suggest that the situation in the region remains highly volatile.

According to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), a large oil tanker was halted on Wednesday night after striking a mine south of the Strait of Hormuz. Shortly after, a supertanker reportedly caught fire while exiting the eastern section of the strait, and a tugboat attempting to assist the vessel was also engulfed in flames. The Iranian army later confirmed that three additional tankers were struck by naval mines in the same vicinity throughout Thursday, further complicating maritime safety in the area.

Multiple oil tankers have been damaged by naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz amid ongoing regional conflict.

Separately, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that a tanker was hit by two projectiles off the coast of Qatar on Wednesday night. While the vessel was approximately 93 kilometers north of Madinat ash-Shamal, the UKMTO did not identify the ship or its flag. This follows an incident from October 30, where the Qatari LNG carrier Al Mayeda was struck by unidentified objects. No injuries were reported in that instance, and the vessel remained operational.

While Qatar is currently engaged in mediation efforts to facilitate peace talks, the military climate remains tense. Unnamed Pentagon officials recently indicated that thousands of U.S. air and naval forces are prepared to resume major combat operations against Iran if ordered by President Donald Trump. In response, Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has called for continued resistance, while IRGC commanders have warned that further hostile actions will only accelerate the expulsion of foreign powers from the region.

Why it matters

The escalation of hostilities in the Strait of Hormuz threatens a critical global energy artery, potentially disrupting oil supplies and increasing shipping costs. For readers in India and South Asia, the instability in these waters poses a significant risk to energy security and trade logistics, as the region relies heavily on oil imports passing through this vital maritime corridor.
