Tehran issues an ultimatum to Washington, warning of severe consequences if American forces resume attacks during their ongoing conflict.
Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi has issued a stark warning to Washington, stating that Tehran will unleash severe retaliation if the United States restarts military strikes. This ultimatum comes as part of an effort by Iranian officials to conclude the ongoing eight-month war between the two nations, following recent maritime incidents and political shifts in the US.
Writing on social media platform X, Araghchi reiterated a standing proposal from Tehran. He emphasized that meeting specific requirements, including halting hostilities across all active fronts, would yield positive results. However, he cautioned that choosing continued conflict would prompt a heavy response from battle-hardened forces. State media also highlighted earlier remarks from the foreign ministry indicating that regional American targets would face uncompromising pressure.
Tensions have remained elevated following an incident where an oil tanker caught fire after striking a naval mine near the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian naval authorities reported that the vessel had its identification systems turned off while navigating restricted waters. Meanwhile, senior military advisers echoed the foreign minister's warnings, noting that defensive capabilities and armaments have been significantly upgraded following prior conflicts, with armed personnel remaining on high alert.

In response to these developments, US President Donald Trump indicated that further strikes remain unlikely provided that negotiations regarding regional stability and nuclear programs continue to progress. Speaking during an interview, Trump noted that while the possibility of future action exists should agreements fail, American military assets in the region remain fully prepared. He mentioned that three aircraft carriers are stationed nearby and ready for deployment if necessary.
The diplomatic exchanges follow recent political transitions in the United States, where the Democratic Party secured majorities in both chambers of Congress after midterm elections. Araghchi noted that these electoral shifts have temporarily delayed negotiations and mediated discussions, leaving officials to await a more stable political atmosphere before diplomatic visits resume.
