Severe downpours have flooded thousands of tents housing displaced individuals across Gaza, leading to urgent pleas for international humanitarian assistance.
Torrential downpours have inundated tens of thousands of tents belonging to displaced residents across war-torn Gaza, according to statements from local authorities. A recent photo heavy rain event has left numerous families exposed to the elements, exacerbating an already dire humanitarian crisis within the territory.
Since early Saturday, families have been forced to flee their makeshift camps in parts of Gaza City, as well as northern and central districts, after rising floodwaters breached their living areas. Palestinian authorities reported that approximately seventy thousand tents were flooded on the very first day of the severe weather. In addition to the flooding, the extreme conditions triggered the collapse of numerous cracked walls and roofs, resulting in multiple injuries across the region, some of which are classified as critical.

Mahmoud Basal, a spokesman for the Palestinian Civil Defence, stated that emergency crews received upward of 1500 calls overnight from residents pleading for urgent help. Basal noted that the civil defence agency is currently operating completely without necessary equipment or capabilities. Officials have issued an urgent distress call directed at the international community and humanitarian organisations, urging an immediate intervention to safeguard hundreds of thousands of displaced people facing these flooded conditions.
Coping without equipment
Local emergency responders have emphasised that they cannot manage the severe repercussions of the ongoing storm by themselves. The combination of intense weather and the near-total lack of operational resources has amplified the risks faced by civilians.
Why it matters
The unfolding situation underscores the severe vulnerability of displaced populations during severe weather events, particularly where infrastructure has been devastated and aid access is restricted. This crisis directly impacts hundreds of thousands of individuals living in temporary camps who lack basic protections against winter storms.
