Market analysts are tracking several companies for potential short-covering activity as the stock markets prepare for a strong session on Thursday, November 5. According to Bajaj Broking, 17 stocks in the Futures and Options (F&O) segment, including Suzlon Energy and Policybazaar, may see traders unwind short positions following a significant gap-up opening. This follows Gift Nifty data showing a gap-up of approximately 313 points over the previous close of 23,970, which could pressure traders holding positions in stocks currently trading near yearly lows.
Understanding the Suzlon stock price and market movement
The research note from the brokerage highlights that the Suzlon stock price, along with other assets like UPL, Policybazaar, PFC, and Mazagon Dock, are currently positioned in a way that suggests potential volatility. Bajaj Broking identifies these candidates by analyzing open interest (OI) at or above the 80th percentile of their one-year range, paired with prices at or below the 20th percentile. This combination of elevated positioning and weak price action often serves as a setup for short covering.
UPL leads the list with its OI at the 100th percentile, while Policybazaar, PFC, and Mazagon Dock also show high OI levels near the bottom of their yearly price bands. Other notable mentions in the report include PI Industries, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, Hindustan Unilever, Swiggy, and Crompton Greaves Consumer Electricals. The brokerage noted that while PFC and UPL show high volume percentiles, PI Industries and Policybazaar demonstrate high delivery percentiles, suggesting that any short covering in these names could be accompanied by fresh buying interest.
Beyond short covering, the report identified 20 stocks that closed within 1 percent of their highest Call OI strikes for the November series. While KEI Industries, Bharat Electronics, and L&T Finance appear to be potential breakout candidates as call writers exit positions, other stocks like Hindustan Aeronautics, Uno Minda, ICICI General Insurance, and HDFC Bank face significant resistance at these levels.
Seventeen F&O stocks may face short-covering pressure today due to a sharp gap-up market opening.
Bajaj Broking clarified that a rise in stock prices coupled with falling open interest during the first hour of trade would confirm short covering, whereas rising prices with increasing open interest would indicate new long positions. The firm emphasized that this analysis is for informational purposes and does not constitute a recommendation to buy or sell any security. Investors are advised to monitor stock-specific developments and volatility surrounding the Sensex weekly expiry.
Why it matters
This analysis is significant for traders and investors monitoring the Indian stock market, as it highlights potential price movements driven by derivative positioning rather than fundamental changes. For those tracking the Suzlon stock news or other high-interest equities, understanding the mechanics of short covering is essential for interpreting intraday volatility.
These insights help market participants distinguish between genuine trend reversals and technical unwinding of positions. As the market reacts to the gap-up opening, the behavior of these 17 identified stocks will serve as a key indicator for broader sentiment in the F&O segment.
