Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin has argued that the network should promote ETH as a store of value rather than relying on an asset model that derives value from burning fees. In a recent thread, Buterin stated that the idea of ETH as a fee-burning token was never as strong as it appeared and that optimizing for it negatively impacts decentralization and capture resistance. Instead, he believes Ethereum's value should come from stability provided by censorship and capture resistance, open source, privacy, and security.
The 2021 EIP-1559 upgrade previously turned Ethereum into deflationary mode during periods of high fee revenue, leading supporters to dub it ultrasound money. However, due to design choices, transaction fees have continued to fall, dropping from 35 cents to 3.5 cents between January and October as daily transactions increased. While Bitcoin maximalists criticized the shift, noting that monetary policy cannot constantly change, Ethereum proponents welcomed the clearer narrative direction.
Understanding the vitalik ethereum shift
Meanwhile, the broader crypto industry faces an uncertain future following the US elections. Although super PAC spending had mixed results, majorities of legislators in both the House and Senate are now designated as pro-crypto. However, critics note that anti-crypto figures may still hold positions of power in key congressional committees, signaling that the industry should expect increased scrutiny in Washington.
In security developments, Binance reported a months-long campaign by North Korean hackers that resulted in a major breach of internal wallet-signing services. THORChain subsequently ignored an FBI warning and restored trading for several digital assets affected by the fallout. On the development front, Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake is targeting December 2028 for the network's post-quantum and post-AI transition, moving the deadline up by one year.
Ethereum creator Vitalik Buterin aims to shift ETH toward a store of value narrative amid evolving security and market conditions.
Why it matters
The strategic shift proposed for Ethereum and the changing political environment in Washington affect developers, investors, and regulatory compliance across the global blockchain ecosystem. Increased congressional scrutiny and accelerated post-quantum transition timelines mean protocols and market participants must adapt to stricter operational standards and evolving network security frameworks.
