Crude oil futures climbed on Thursday as investors re-evaluated the ongoing conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran following tanker attacks.

Global crude oil markets experienced a rebound on Thursday as investors assessed the future of the ongoing conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran, while new vessel attacks renewed supply concerns. Brent crude futures increased by 3.8% to finish at $98.29 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate crude grew 2.7% to settle at $90.52 a barrel. These movements followed a steep decline on Wednesday when both benchmarks tumbled more than 8% to hit their lowest settlement levels since August 31. Analysts noted that the unresolved situation in the Middle East drove this modest price recovery.

What is happening with crude oil right now?

The market has faced persistent anxiety driven by maritime incidents and geopolitical tensions. According to Andy Lipow, president of Lipow Oil Associates, reports of tankers striking mines or facing drone targeting in the Middle East continue to trouble the market, alongside Iran's unyielding stance on negotiations with the US. The UK maritime security agency, UKMTO, reported that attacks on Gulf tankers remain near record pacing, with at least five vessels logging incidents since Sunday following a severe month in October where 35 vessels were hit.

Crude oil prices rebounded as ongoing Middle East conflict and tanker attacks renewed supply worries.

Why are prices fluctuating?

Political shifts in the US have added further complexity to the outlook. The war on Iran, launched in February by US President Donald Trump and Israel, caused soaring fuel prices that became critical voter concerns. In Tuesday's midterm elections, Democrats captured control of both houses of Congress, defeating the Republican Party. Citi warned in a note that the White House might shift its focus toward executive foreign policy powers and potentially escalate the war now that midterms have concluded. Conversely, Eurasia Group lowered its probability estimate for renewed US strikes on Iran to 60% from 65% while raising the likelihood of a continued standoff to 30%, noting that any major escalation could push Brent between $110 and $125 per barrel. Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi discussed diplomatic progress regarding regional stability with his Saudi and Qatari counterparts.

Why it matters

For consumers and markets globally, including in India where crude oil stands as a heavily searched topic, fluctuating fuel prices directly influence economic stability and inflation. Any potential escalation in the Middle East threatens to drive energy costs significantly higher, impacting global supply chains and domestic fuel expenses.
