Unseasonal warmth reaches New York and Boston as a US midwest low pressure system drags warm air north, while severe storms impact voting.

Despite the transition into autumn across the northern hemisphere, parts of eastern North America have recently experienced an exceptionally late taste of summer. Temperatures approached 23 degrees Celsius in New York and Boston, marking figures about seven to ten degrees above normal for early November. This unseasonable warmth also extended into regions of eastern Canada, where temperatures exceeded 20 degrees Celsius, sitting about ten to fifteen degrees above typical seasonal expectations. The balmy conditions were generated by an area of low pressure situated in the US midwest, which pulled exceptionally warm air northward from the Gulf of Mexico along its eastern boundary. Weather forecasters indicate this low-pressure system will gradually drift eastward, allowing regional temperatures to return closer to seasonal averages over the coming days.

Further south in the United States, severe thunderstorms caused significant disruptions this week, leading to numerous flood warnings and evacuation alerts across multiple states. The turbulent weather directly impacted midterms voting polling stations in several regions, including Florida, Oklahoma, and Colorado. In Keyes, Oklahoma, powerful storms spawned a tornado that touched down and forced the relocation of a local polling station. While the tornado caused extensive damage to homes and infrastructure throughout the town, no casualties were reported. State officials in various affected areas have formally requested federal funding assistance to recover from the widespread property damage.

Unseasonal US midwest low pressure brings late summer heat and severe storms to North America.

Meanwhile, across the Atlantic Ocean, authorities in the Mediterranean regions of southern France, Corsica, and Sardinia issued severe flood warnings due to a separate low-pressure system bringing heavy thunderstorms and torrential rain. Projections estimate between 50 and 100 millimeters of rainfall over the coming days, with localized totals potentially exceeding 100 millimeters in parts of southern France and Corsica. Prolonged torrential downpours could deposit up to 80 millimeters within a single 24-hour period, with additional rain expected as low pressure persists.

Why it matters

These severe weather events highlight the disruptive impact of unseasonable meteorological patterns on civic processes like voting, while also posing infrastructure challenges that require federal disaster assistance. The widespread flooding and storm damage affect local communities by threatening homes and requiring emergency relocations of critical polling locations.
