Representing the nation at the Billie Jean King Cup and Davis Cup Junior Finals in Cairo, Egypt, Team Canada experienced a challenging tournament as both squads were eliminated from quarter-final contention during round-robin play. Francesco Tosini reported on the performances of the young tennis talents competing on the international stage.
Led by captain Sharon Fichman, the girls' team began their campaign against Romania by splitting the initial two singles matches, featuring a dominant performance from Isabella Ruyu Yan who surrendered only six games. Despite that strong start, the Canadians dropped the decisive doubles rubber. A tough tie followed against the four-time reigning champions from the United States, where two matches extended to three sets before Canada was swept. The girls recovered to finish round-robin action strongly by overcoming Slovakia through a comeback win. After falling behind, Yan conceded just one game to level the score before teaming up with Elisabeth Djabourian to secure a straight-sets doubles victory. Canada will now face eighth seeds Colombia in the opening round of the 9th to 16th place play-off.
