Michel Barnier states the UK cannot access the EU single market without accepting conditions such as the free movement of people.
Michel Barnier has warned that the United Kingdom cannot selectively choose elements of the European Union single market without accepting all associated obligations. Speaking on a recent broadcast, the veteran political figure addressed ongoing discussions surrounding future ties between London and Brussels nearly six years after the nation's departure from the trading bloc.
During the interview, the former Brexit negotiator emphasised that member states would firmly reject any arrangements akin to an ร la carte menu. He stressed that access to the internal market requires adherence to all four foundational freedoms, which encompass the circulation of goods, services, capital, and people. According to his assessment, countries cannot adopt one freedom while discarding another.

Prime Minister Burnham has previously indicated an openness to exploring closer relations and evaluating various pathways for future cooperation, though any major shifts remain ruled out prior to upcoming electoral events. Meanwhile, both British and European officials prepare for an upcoming summit in Brussels to discuss potential agreements concerning food standards, youth mobility visas, and environmental carbon trading frameworks.
In addition to trade discussions, the senior political figure addressed financial contributions and political rhetoric. He predicted that European governments would dismiss any reinstatement of historical budget rebates previously granted to the UK. He also drew comparisons between foreign populist figures, asserting that certain political figures rely on identical tactics regarding past campaign claims surrounding national contributions.
Why it matters
This debate directly affects future economic regulations, border policies, and diplomatic agreements between the UK and the European Union. Decisions made during upcoming bilateral meetings will shape trade conditions for goods and services, ultimately impacting industries and citizens relying on cross-border cooperation.
